Disability is Other People: My Superhero Story

My book is being published on July 28th. You can read my blogs about the writing process below and preorder here

It is a memoir. Not another story about overcoming disability, but living well with it. Richard embarks on a quest for identity and meaning in a world that labelled him as a superhero and an outsider. In a society that aggressively disables pretty much everyone and where many are facing disability for the first time, his memoir gives anyone labelled as ‘different’ by Other People the confidence they need to stand up for themselves and change their own lives.

Drawing on experience and humour, he shares everything he has learned through his triumphs and mistakes, Richard deconstructs traditional perspectives on disability and draws out the links to other oppressed communities struggling for Equality. He shows how the attitudes and behaviours of Other People are the main disabling forces in life and considers the big issues he has faced along the way; these include Hope, Death, Ableism, The Media, and Political Correctness. It is not until he retires that he realises that volunteering and getting to know Other People is actually the core value in life. He shows us how we can make the world a better place and offers his own advice on how to live with disability. As an MBE, 14 years of austerity and the trauma of the pandemic sharpen his newfound activism, does he become a Superhero?

This a remarkable story of self-discovery, luck, resilience, and love. A heart warming and powerfully positive memoir which enlightens us that Disability is a fundamental issue for humanity.
